new do

on tuesday evening, i came home to this... a tiny little mohawk. on my tiny little guy. he looks so cute, my heart melted a little bit. danny had tried to take him for a professional cut while i was at work, but there were no appointments available. so he shaved it himself instead, and he did a great job. malcolm sat very still during the whole process. i'm guessing it also helped that danny had promised him a new book if he was good.

so we took a late trip to barnes & noble. danny and i enjoyed a coffee, while malcolm and i enjoyed the children's book section. win, win! :)

we didn't see much of danny last week. his work schedule was pretty crazy, including a few nights where he was at the shop until well after 2 am. ah, the joys of being self-employed i suppose. so when saturday rolled around, and i told him that i had planned on taking the kids downtown to the annual raleigh arts festival, he decided to skip going back to the shop and came with us instead. i'm glad he did. we had a great time.

we headed out at 10 am, in hopes of beating the crowds and the heat. first stop was to see our friend garrett's latest art project... on a city bus!

after chatting with garrett for a few minutes, malcolm was eager to head to the next stop. he started to leave without us, funny little dude.

when i was looking online to see what artsplosure had to offer for the younger crowd, we discovered that there would be a luminarium! alanna and i went in one when we still lived in salt lake city, at the utah arts festival probably 7 or 8 years ago, and we loved it. so i knew that malcolm would love to go inside as well. he was so excited and asked about "the bubble" for days before our visit. it was awesome in there.

this is what it looked like on the outside. all the vibrant color that you see in the photos above was created by those small slivers of color + natural sunlight. very cool.

we got italian ice, strolled through the vendors area, and then headed to the kids activities.

malcolm isn't usually a fan of arts & crafts, but he had fun making a few things while we were there. when it was time to head home for a nap, he wanted to stay and do more activities.

on our way to the car, we passed this staircase. i drive this way nearly everyday to pick alanna up from school, and every time i see it i think how it would be a great spot for a photo. i mentioned this to danny, and he offered to take our picture. as soon as we sat down, malcolm farted. we all laughed, and then he farted again! the stone walls made it seem extra loud, it was hilarious! danny got these two great shots. perfect family portrait :)

kids together

last week we ventured out to a new (to us) park in our area. i discovered it online, and as soon as i saw the dragon photos, i knew that malcolm would love it there. it is a bit of a drive from our house, but totally worth it. i think this will be one of our new favorite places to play.

the first playground

the second playground

a tire swing! alanna always loved these! all three of us got on it, and it was so much fun :)
(malcolm is laughing, not crying)

dogwood bench (our state flower)

time to leave, but we'll be back!

and as an added bonus, this park is located off the same highway exit as one of our favorite treat spots, the skinny dip. they have a vegan flavor every day, and this day was german chocolate cake! so good!

what a great afternoon.

mama said

yesterday i did a little guest post on one of my very favorite blogs, sometimes sweet. thank you again danielle for asking me to be apart of this series, there were so many great posts by other blogging mothers that i admire, so i feel honored to have been included. it took me quite a while to type out just the right things to say, and think i was a little too wordy (yawn!), but whatever. i'm glad i did it, even if no one took the time to read it, since it was much too long. ha! click here if you'd like to take a peek.

p.s. to anyone who may have made your way over to my corner of the web via that post, hello! thanks for stopping by :)

saturday evening with the fam, plus cam

i had to work saturday morning, but i didn't mind, because we were having an adoption meet & greet "puppypalooza" with nine adorable puppies! plus cuda came to visit too! which made for a great start to the day. it sure was busy at the store. after i got home, we all headed to chapel hill for veggie burgers and to wander around our favorite shops. our friend cameron tagged along. it was a very nice day indeed

malcolm was having so much fun jumping and running around outside of weaver street market. this pretty much sums it up... a blur :)

i was watching him here, do see his little blur in the corner?

the co-op was all sold out of our favorite vegan chocolate cake, so we headed over to durham to get dessert instead. malcolm and cameron are hilarious together. cambo is definitely one of malcolm's favorites, and he was in rare form all day because of it. that little guy is the best thing ever.

what?! ;)

while making our way down ninth street in the dark, i discovered the cutest store ever. why have i never noticed it before?! i took this photo to remind me that i need to check it out next time we are in durham. pretty sure it's my new favorite local store... and i've never even been inside it yet!

look what i found!

a few weeks ago, i was on facebook and i saw a link to the eric carle museum shop blog which i had not visited in a while. i made my way over and read back through quite a few posts, when i was pleasantly surprised to find this post! look ma, that's my leg! appropriately titled "books with impact", eric carle's beautiful illustrations and simple but inspiring stories truly have touched me, and impacted my life forever. how exciting that i was mentioned (not by name) and that she included my photograph as well.

danny took this screen shot with his fancy new mac book. you can click on the image to open it up larger, or just click that second link up there to read the full post. if you haven't been to the eric carle
amazon page before, go check it out, and watch the little video on the right hand side of the screen. sometimes i feel like he has made his books just for me.
