18 months

malcolm turned 18 months old yesterday. he is growing up so fast. but really he is still just a little tyke. i love all the new things he's been learning and picking up on. this age is great. he's becoming much more independent, and so smart... and he can't talk back yet, haha. he does the cutest things everyday, that make us laugh. it makes me sad to think about all the amazing things he does, that my family and friends back home are missing out on. i really need to invest in a good digital camcorder, so that i can get some better videos of him. my old camera's video function just doesn't cut it. anyway, here are some cute photos from yesterday. he loves alanna's lightsaber. it makes noise and lights up, and he is very serious when he plays with it, haha.

a few things that have happened this past month:

  • he's started to get a molar. so far he only has 8 front teeth. 4 on top and 4 on bottom.

  • his new words are "baby", "hi dada", "puppy", and "bob" (spongebob). plus he does lots of other crazy baby talk. sometimes it goes on and on forever.

  • he bends his elbows, and puts his hands palm up, as if he is confused and asking "what's going on?" or "where is it?", when he's looking for something or someone. it's adorable.

  • he can climb onto the recliner, dining room chairs (and table), couch - and up onto the window sills (scary!), all by himself. but not out of the crib yet.

  • he can hang onto our backs, all by himself (hands-free for me and alanna), for a piggy-back ride.

  • he can mimic little sounds we make. my favorite is a howling wolf.

  • he knows these body parts, and will show you where they are when asked: hair, eyes, ears, nose, mouth, teeth, (belly) button, and toes.

i sure do love this little guy!

mama has a new "job"

i've started doing mail order again this week. so this is currently what our dining room looks like.

after danny and i were married, and alanna and i moved to nc, i took over doing all of the mail order for his online merch store. my mother-in-law dubbed me his "mail order bride", haha. i did it from our home, for 2 and a half years, up until i had malcolm. but after he was born, i just didn't have the time or energy to keep up with it. we get a lot of orders, and it is pretty time consuming. so danny started doing it again from his office.

my husband shares his shop/warehouse space with another guy who also owns a small record label. they just got his online merch store up and running, so he has hired me to process all of the orders. i like doing it, and it will be nice to have a little extra spending money (which i will be putting towards our trip to disneyland in october!).

in related news, malcolm has been sleeping like a champ! he's in bed between 9:30 - 10:30 pm, and he stays asleep all night until about 9:30 am. yay! it was my goal to have him in bed around 9 pm, so this is pretty amazing (remember when he was keeping me up until 5 am?!). i will work on mail order at night after malcolm is in bed. right now i'm working on catching up about a months worth of pre-order items, so i've been missing out on my hubby time. danny and i usually watch a program together after the kids are in bed. but once i get through all of these orders, i will only have to spend an hour or less a night on it. pretty sweet.

third batch's a charm

i made these cookies again this past weekend, and they turned out even better than before! i used slightly less flour than it calls for (because i ran out) and a bit more chocolate on top (but not too much, like the first time). i also only baked them for about 10-11 minutes, so they weren't too hard after they cooled. holy crap, they were delicious! try the recipe, it's pretty easy and you will love them!

toys, toys, & more toys!

this morning, the kids and i went to the kids exchange. our city has this giant 3 day event twice a year, where anyone can buy and sell their used baby and kids items. it's free to get in, and if you sell things, you get 2/3 of the selling price (which you set yourself). it was started 6 years ago by three stay-at-home mom's as a way to earn some extra money. we went in january for the first time, and found some good stuff for the kids. it was right before malcolm's birthday, so we didn't get much for him then, since his party was coming right up. but he is almost a year and a half now, and much bigger. so he needs some new toys and learning activities. we were there for almost 4 hours! crazy, i know. i'll admit it is a bit overwhelming. it is held in this giant building at the fairgrounds, and there is sooo much stuff packed in there, so it takes a while to take it all in, and decide what to get. plus with the crowds, and a stroller loaded with toys, you have to take your time. we stood in line for just about an hour to checkout and pay. but we made out with some awesome stuff! talk about the ultimate way to recycle. plus by shopping there, we are helping out other parents who could use some extra cash. i'm definitely going to start saving items to sell the next time around.

this photo doesn't even come close to showing the sheer mayhem of this place

malcolm was sooo good the whole time, and was wiped out by the time we got to the registers

malcolm's booty

alanna's stuff (brand new cadoo game)

fruits and veggies puzzles

magnetic white board on one side, magnetic chalk board on the other

and malcolm's favorite item of the day!

he's been putting them on, and taking them off all day, haha

the weekend & food, inc.

this past weekend was pretty chill. we didn't really do much. the weather was weird. raining really hard on friday, then really hot and sunny on sunday, and raining a bit again today. on friday, danny's friend paul drove out here to see a movie with us. we went and saw
wow. all i can say is: please, please, please GO SEE THIS FILM!! seriously. it will make you stop and think about what you are feeding your family (and yourself). i've heard a lot of this stuff before... but this movie was just another awesome reminder of why i am raising my kids vegan. and also why i should be buying more organic and locally grown foods (i've been pretty good about this, but i will be much more conscious about it when i'm out shopping from now on). even if you are not veg, please go out of your way to see this movie. it will open up your eyes about all kinds of food related bs that goes on behind closed doors, and right under our noses. this country has some serious issues.

on saturday we took the kids to lake johnson to feed the ducks. like usual, the geese pretty much took over. most of them were taller than malcolm, and at one point, they had him surrounded and were chasing him. it was pretty funny. here are some photos:

time with daddy

there are definitely pros and cons to being self employed, and owning your own small business. some of the good: making your own schedule. taking time off when you want. not having to wait 2 weeks to be paid. not having to answer to "the man". tons of expenses/deductions = phat tax refunds! and some of the bad: having no health insurance. occasionally dealing with shitty people, and wondering if and when you will be paid (for a job that has already been finished and delivered). sometimes having to work all day, all week long, and not getting to spend time with the fam. stress. stress. and more stress.

but yesterday, danny took the day off to watch malcolm, so i could take alanna to the movies. they went out to his parents house (about 45 minutes from us, outside of the city). danny loves it out there. i hear that malcolm had a blast, playing at the park, chasing ducks, running with some big kids, walking on the pier over the little lake. playing with sticks in grandma vicky and grandpa dan's yard, running through their corn, eating cherry tomatoes from the garden.

here are some photos via danny's phone.

HP6 & more...

i took alanna to see harry potter and the half blood prince today. we hit the second showing of the day, just after noon. the theater was only about half full, and was totally silent the entire time (that's rare around here), other than a few laughs during funny parts. the movie was awesome! we both loved it. and it actually made me tear up a few times. i love all of the hp movies. they really are done so well. i have just started reading the books, at the request of alanna. she thinks that i will understand and like the movies better, after i have read the series. which i'm sure she is right. i am half way through the first book. i don't have a lot of time to sit quietly and read, so i'm just doing a chapter or two a night, before bed. wish me luck... it may take me years to finish all seven books.

the previews were good too. we used to go to the movies a lot, before malcolm was born. so i was always up to date on what new ones were coming out soon etc. but now i'm a bit lost. i loved the preview for
sherlock holmes, it looks really good. but my favorite preview was for where the wild things are!! and yes, it also brought tears to my eyes. i'm sooo excited for this film! it looks like it should be pretty damn amazing. october 16th can't come soon enough...

oh, and if you love this book and maurice sendak, then be sure to check out this blog: http://www.terribleyelloweyes.com/

thanks annie!

my old friend annie (from high school) did some magic on these photos of malcolm today. i think they look awesome! i would love to know how to touch up my photos like this. maybe someday? but i don't even have photoshop... so i think it'll be a while. thanks again annie! check out her photo blog and her website too.

beach bums

on saturday, we finally made it out to the beach. this was the fourth time we've gone since we've lived in nc, and it was malcolm's first trip. he absolutely LOVED it! the weather was perfect, and the water temperature was just right. it really couldn't have been a better day to go. we had an awesome time. i love the beach.

malcolm throwing sand

he found this awesome shell with daddy

i have no idea what these little ocean critters are, but they were pretty interesting. they would burrow into the rocky sand, when the waves crashed on the beach. alanna caught them in the sand sifter toy, and then put them in the bucket. they were fast and kind of hard to catch. you could feel the big ones moving around your feet underwater. kinda creepy.

tired baby hugs...

and baby kisses

we were waterlogged, and i'm positive i was the whitest person on the beach, haha

the sand farther away from the water was sooo soft

heading back to the water

my tootsies loved it there

malcolm was putting each shell in his mouth,
i think he liked the way they felt on his teeth

at the end of the day, he was exhausted. we all were. he actually fell asleep up there, and layed his head on danny's head for a bit. so funny. i can't wait to go back.
